So I guess seafood is now a big no-no for me, what a sad day. Isn’t it funny how your body changes over the years?
About a year & ½ ago I had lobster at my father in laws house. While I was eating it my hands got really itchy. I kinda dismissed it and went on with life. Well over the last year I have had lobster a couple more times, as well as shrimp. With the same results. Only when it started with the shrimp was when I wondered if I was possibly developing an allergic reaction.
So today for lunch I had a green salad with tomatoes, black olive and Balsamic Vinegar Dressing and old shrimp with cocktail sauce. Sounds good huh? Well you know what happened next, right?
As I was eating my hands started to get itchy, I thought “What ever, I’m still eating the shrimp.” and I kept on eating. Now I am a multi-tasker, I eat and work, so it takes some time for me to eat. Well with in 30 minutes I started to notice that my throat started to itch, a little odd I thought. Kept on working and eating. A few more minutes went by and now my throat really itches and I find that I feel like my throat is closing. I run in the bathroom open my mouth and look in the mirror and would you freakin know it, it looks like I have swollen tonsils.
I dragged my ass to the Safety Engineer and I said “Something is wrong with me!”
Well, we already knew that!” he replies “ Tell me something I don’t already know.”
I looked at him and said “Very funny, but I’m not f’in foolin around!”
“What is the problem?” he asks.
“I had lunch and my hands are itchy and I feel like my throat is closing!” I answered.
He says “Ok, open your pie hole so I can take a look” (He’s lucky I like him!)
He takes a peak and says “What was for lunch, young lady?”
“Salad and shrimp.” I replied..
Well seeing as your tonsils have been removed, I would guess that you are having an reaction to the shrimp that you ate.” He said. “Do I need to call the ambulance to come and get you?
“No, I don’t think so.” I said.
“Ok, well you need to sit in here with me until you feel better.” He added.
Yeah for me I thought and I sat there.
Well needless to say I made it back to my desk after sitting there for almost 2 hrs and now I am annoyed #1 because I got nothing done, #2 it will all have to be done tomorrow because I leave in 15 minutes and the biggest annoyance of all, I CAN’T EAT SHRIMP OR LOBSTER ANYMORE!! I have to go see the doc for an allergy test to confirm. But it is really a sad day for me. :0(

I can only image how you feel. But I don't like shrimp or lobster anyway. A friend of mine cant eat peanuts. When I found this out I was like, "No Snikers? No Reeses Pieces? NOOOOOOO!!!!" I don't see how he can do it. But things'll be okay. After awhile, you won't even like shrimp or lobster... When you see them you'll think of death!

I was reading an article that said it was a common adult-onset allergy and that a person could eat shrimp for years before developing a noticeable reaction. Spoiled shrimp can also release a histamine than can cause allergic reactions.
I have an allergy to crab since my finger was cut off by crab carapace when i was small. :(
I guess if you have never had a Snickers or Reese's you don't know what you are missing! I'd sure miss them though if I couldn't eat them.
Rose - That was what I heard as well. But I didn't know about the spoiled shrimp thing! I don't think it was spoiled. It smelled fine and didn't taste bad.
Kin - Sorry to hear that. Geez, even if I didn't have an allergy to crab after losing a finger, I don't think I would eat it anyways!
I feel your pain! I love shrimp (the only seafood I eat) and if I had to give it up I'd absolutely feel like you do! :) Lets hope it's something temporary only :)
