So I thought a lot about what went down over here Thursday night. I didn't get much sleep and when I finally did wake up from what felt like a short nap I decided that I was not going to let them control my family. I called my landlord, who by the way is a very nice guy and decided that I had come up with a solution. Thursday night I flew off the handle, my husband was the extremely cool one for once. Up until that night I jokingly entertained everyone and really let it roll off my back, Thursday night was a different story all together. I states that I would make sure my son went somewhere else after school just to save any issues and I told him I would move. I was tired of it and I was all done. Friday morning I woke up and had a different thought. No, I was not going to pay to send my almost 14 year old child somewhere, no I was not going to move out with the holidays right around the corner. Yes I would make sure Zac stayed after school to do the after school program on Monday and Wednesday (the only days they have after school programs) Yes I will make sure that he is not the brunt of there accusations and I will put a lock on the basement door....for now.
So I talk it over with my husband and we agree that this was good. I call my landlord and left him a message to call me back. When he called back I told him I refused to move out right around the holidays and after the new year we would start looking to leave. I wanted to know if it was ok to put a lock on the basement door until this drama all dies down. He abruptly cut me off and said "Kyle called me last this morning and said you guys were banging things around ans woke up Niko (their 4 year old son). They said they were moving out and they were to old to be dealing with this crap. They also asked for their security deposit back early so that they could use it to move. I asked Kyle if he was giving me his 30 days notice and Kyle responded with, well no, we haven't started looking yet." Hmmm all that right there sound like crap! I have a lot of respect for most people and even I wouldn't make a lot of racket intentionally to wake up a child. The problem here is this little boy, who is 4, goes to bed at 7 pm! I don't know many people who put their kid to bed at 7 pm, maybe 8 or 8:30 but not 7 pm. I have no desire to sit in my house and do nothing all night. I work till 5 pm and have a lot to do once I get home, sometimes I don't get done till 9 pm. Angie, the wife, stays home all day so she gets to do what she needs to do during the day. I am sorry I don't have that luxury.
So the landlord has no problem with the lock going on the door. I asked him not to tell them and at any point that he gets a phone call saying that there is a cigarette smoke smell in their basement he has my permission to go straight to my house and knock on the door. Zac will let him in and he can go right to the door and use his key to evaluate the situation himself. We agree and he offers me their side once they move out. It is clearly the better side, huge side yard, slightly bigger apartment and a private drive way. We have a shared driveway with the duplex next to us so our cars are lined up. The yard we can use now but it is just an uncomfortable situation and was even when we were all getting along.
My take on that phone call is; I think they were looking to get us kicked out. The smoking thing isn't working because as I have said before, it is not in my lease that I cannot smoke in my house. Ground for throwing us out would be excessive noise. I think they were hoping that the landlord would say "No, stay. I will have them move out." They didn't get that from the landlord, they got "Are you giving me 30 days notice today?" I love it, that was the best thing I have heard. My opinion, I have a feeling that it will all stop, the calls and the drama. Their master plan hasn't worked and since we can't have an aluminum fence installation to separate us completely we will have to wait and see if the really do move or be the ones to move after the new year. If we do move though, I guarantee that the crap will happen to the tenants after us...I hope they move.
