Class Trip

So my son was supposed to go on the 6th grade class trip Monday. Now he is not going! I kinda feel bad for him, but at the same time I think he did not heed my warnings about his behavior. We discussed how he needed to be on his best behavior at school, mind what the teachers say and do his best. It seems like he just doesn't know when to stop and before he knows it he has himself in a heap of shit!!

He has some issues which I think don't really help him when he tries so hard to be could. He has been diagnosed with ADHD with Impulsiveness, ODD, Anxiety, Tourettes brought on by taking Ritalin for 4 years and auditory hallucinations. On top of it all about 5 years ago his father walked out of his life and he is really pissed off about that! As I type and read I and think, Holy Shit, how does he function?!?

"Z" takes medication for the auditory hallucinations but nothing for the ADHD because the doctors are afraid that it could that the stimulant's prescribed for ADHD will make the Tics worse. I am grateful that his psychiatrist is not a "pill pusher" but this is just becoming to much. He had more detentions than I can keep track of, the teachers are sick of dealing with him. I feel bad because I feel like I haven't done enough for him and something more needs to be done. We have an appointment tomorrow with the doctor again and I think we will discuss what we could possibly due for next year.

"Z" was just accepted into an alternative school program at the beginning of the week. I think it will work out good for him. There are only 8 kids in the class and it is very structured. He is very excited to go more because the classes are small. What he didn't really know about was what the rest of the program was about.

He will learn coping skills, along with behavioral modification and social skills. There will be no outside contact with the mainstream classes. They arrive at school before everyone else, leave before everyone, a school bus will pick them all up and bring them all home.

We'll see, he is a great kid who had such a rough year. He really hates school more than anything and I hope that next year it will be a little different!

Hey Diamond, at least you have an alternative school program there for 'Z' to go to. My kid has this syndrome called Mild Mental Retardation and he's currently attending regular school, god know hows he's coping there. Worse still, most of the schools and teachers here are pretty ignorant of this condition. They tend to think that kids like these are slow learners or plain stupid! It's sad but true. There are a few specialized schools around but they're pretty expensive. He's currently undergoing therapy with a child psychologist and I do hope he'll be able to make it on his own in the future when the wife and me are no longer around to see to his needs. He's a good kid, always bubbly and cheerful. I'm sure your 'Z' is the same too, ya :)

I am sorry for your troubles with the schools. I am not sure how education is handled over in Maylasia, so it is hard to give you advice. Here in the states education is a right for all. If the school can not give a child a free and approprite education then it is up to the school to find a better learning enviroment. Even if it is at the School Districts expense.

The education here is free but its just that special schools porvided by the government is so few and far between. The speicalised ones are pretty expensive. Your country's cool :)
