The chapter I read was 5 Promises: Make These Promises to Unleash the 10 Forces Within You out of the book, Inside Every Woman, written by Vickie Milazzo RN, MSN, JD . From the title you can tell the book is a book for women.
Now I have not read many self help books, actually I have never read a self help book, mostly because I have never taken the time to go to the book store and pick one up. This just happened to fall into my lap. I just want to add that I normally would now do a review of a book and that this is actually how I feel the chapter pertains to me personally, the insights it has given me on my life
Before I started to read this chapter, I thought, “Geez, this is a bunch fooey”. I figured that I would give it a chance since it a book for women, most importantly, written by a woman. I read Promise 1 and immediately my interest was peaked..
Live And Work A Passionate Life, neither of which I really do. I do my job not because I love it, but because I have to. I used to love my job, but it is a thankless job. When there is no support system, no one to back you up, you feel like your fighting a hopeless battle. You then succumb and become what the kind of employee the company wants you to be, not the employee you want to be. In my personal life, my passion is my son and making sure that he is growing up to be the best man possible with such obstacles in his life.
Promise 2: I Will Go For It Or Reject It Out Right…wow. This chapter made me think a lot. Very few people know this about me, but when I was a child of 8 years old, I told my grandmother that I wanted to be an actress or a lawyer when I grew up. Well, the dream of being an actress is far from over, but being a lawyer is still something I think about on a weekly basis. I had my son at 19 and have been using that as my excuse for not going to college.
Now at 31, I still use that excuse and follow up with “Well seeing as he has learning disabilities he will need me there to help him. His schooling is more important than mine is.” When in the reality of it, yes he needs me there, but maybe not as much as I think he does. It made me realize that I need to make a choice, either follow my heart or dismiss the dream all together. All these years I could have been working at it slowly, part time but I let the excuses get in the way and determine what I was going to do with my life. Would I feel more accomplished and fufilled if I make my dream of being a lawyer a reality. I bet I would!!
So with all that said, there is much more to this chapter and if you would like to finish reading it, which I would recommend, then check it out at http://insideeverywoman.com/ You have nothing to lose, it really opened my eyes to a lot of things in my life and will be the first self help book I own.
I like self-help books like this but you are right, it is important to weed through the fluff and find the substantial in some of the stuff that is out there.
ReplyDeleteSomething similar you might like is The 7 Decisions by Andy Andrews. I got the DVD and it was very informative, motivational and funny. I highly recommend it!
