Leaving A Child In The Car

My son and I went to the grocery store the last night to pick up a few things for dinner. It was a fairly quick trip, in and out, considering that it was in the early evening, Thank Goodness!!

On the way out of the store there was a woman, who looked to be in her mid 40's walking in front of us. Nothing unusual about her, I would have never even of noticed anything was off. Well, my son noticed right away, something wasn't right.

Amazingly "Z" was quiet this time. He grabs my arm as we are walking past the car that the woman stopped at and he says "Mom, there was a little kid in that car!" I looked at him and said "What, are you sure, where?" He repeats himself, very sure about what he has just seen and points at the car. So I turn around to take a look and he was right, there was someone in the car and you could barely see the top of the kids head. Then it dawns on me that this is the same lady who was in front of us in the store and in the parking lot, mind you, with no child and now was talking to some one in the car with the same tone you would use with a child So now I am dumbfounded. I start scanning the area looking for another adult and I don't see one. I am starting to get a little infuriated. I wish I noticed it on the way in the store.

I know it is on the news all the time and you usually hear about it because it is so freakin hot out, the windows are up and the child is practically dead. I never thought I would actually see it myself. Why, why, why would you do that! "Z" is 12 years old and I am uncomfortable about leaving him in the car even at his age nevermind leaving a small child in the car and go in the store for a few things.

Did you say anything to her about it?

I have seen this with animals, elderly and children. I feel apprehensive about saying something, but once I am a witness, I march up and advise them they need to do something about this. Otherwise I call 911 and tell them. If some one or animals were is distress I would break the window and rescue them. I don't care if the car owner was seven feet tall and mean.

Some people are incredibly insensitive, lacking in respect for others, are stupid and totally wrapped up in themselves. The news brings this situation up every year and it turns out, for the most part to be women who do this the most. Incredible!

Here I go, I get very angry about this subject. But I am glad you brought it up! Good for you and you son, tell him he is a real lifeguard.

  2. It happens here too and the worst thing is many of these stories have very sad and fatal ends :( The parents here are even more irresponsible at times. Can you imagine putting a child in your lap while driving????? I've seen it countless times here and it really is so sad!

  3. Theresa, I'm with you. As much as it might go against your grain, call 911. Often, people have to be penialized to "learn" their lesson. Woman probably didn't think of the hazards. If cops show up, she'll take it seriously.
    Right on Theresa!
